2018 J/70 Midwinter Championship

February 26, 2018

Coral Reef Yacht Club, Miami Florida hosted the 2018 J/70 Midwinter Championship.  Five teams with Fleet 9 or local Marblehead sailors competed in the event.

Congratulations Nancy Glover, Mark Foster and Team Winterwind for your third place finish in the Corinthian standing.  Mark Foster was on helm, Kevin Kendall trimmed, Rick Myers called tactics on bow with Nancy Glover on floater duties.

The 61 boat fleet was deep in talent, and competition was cut-throat as this was the last event whereby owners could qualify for the 2018 J/70 World Championship hosted by Eastern Yacht Club, Marblehead Ma in late September.  Weather conditions were Biscayne Bay beautiful with decent wind during all three days.

Jud Smith with Team Africa (USA 1310) finished seventeenth overall in the Open division with two top ten finishes including a bullet in race 6.  Jud spent most of last year crewing to capture the 2017 World Championship title on Relative Obscurity, and is re-focusing his efforts now on helming for the 2018 Worlds title.  Also in the Open division, Fleet 9’s founder Henry Brauer with Team Rascal finished forty-third (43) overall.  That result masked his team’s experience and skill given two u-flags, one black-flag and one redress.

Fleet 9’s Bill Lynn teamed up with Ed Keller on Flying None (USA 28) finishing seventh overall in the Corinthian division.  Frank McNamara and Team Chinook finished eleventh (11) overall in the Corinthian division.

Congratulations to all on a tough and hard fought regatta.
