Three Fleet 9 teams competed in the 2017/2018 Davis Island Yacht Club Quantum J/70 Winter Series. Series 3 was held on February 9-10. The first day was light and flat with only one completed race. Day two’s three races were held in sunny with warm temperatures and 8-10 knot winds from the south east, dying just west of south later in the day.
Congratulations Nancy Glover and Team WinterWind who took third place in the Corinthian division for the Series 1 - 3. In Series 3 alone, WinterWind ended up eighteenth out of a total 60 open and Corinthian boats, and took third place in the Corinthian standing. WinterWind had Rick Myers on bow, Kevin Kendall on trimming and Mark Foster driving.
Congratulations Frank McNamara and Team Chinook who placed fourth overall in Series 1 – 3 Corinthian standing. Team Chinook ended twenty-second overall in the Open division and fourth in Corinthian in the Series 3 regatta. Chinook’s team consisted of Fleet 9 member Sam Altreuter on bow and calling big picture strategy, while Martha Altreuter took main trim and developed tactical plans. Rick Guardia trimmed both jib and spinnaker.
Fleet 9’s Darby Smith drove Africa which finished thirteenth overall in Series 1 – 3 standing. Africa had Trent Long, Jud Smith and William Felder to fill her team. An unfortunate U-Flag in race three held Africa back from placing 6th overall in Series 3.
Africa and WinterWind are registered for the February 16-18 2018 Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta in St Petersburg. Africa, WinterWind and Chinook are also registered for the February 21 – 25 2018 J/70 Midwinter Championship to be held at Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami.
Fleet 9 wishes Nancy Glover and Frank McNamara success at the two final events of the 2018 World Championship qualifiers. Based on both their performances, they certainly have acquired a leg up on the rest of us with their time in the boat this winter, and have proven their Worlds worthiness in an increasingly competitive racing environment.
