Three Fleet 9 teams are competing in the 2017/2018 Davis Island Yacht Club Quantum J/70 Winter Series. Series 2 was held on January 6 – 7. The first day brought light and flat unpredictable conditions. Day two saw 15-20 knot wind with relatively flat waters; throughout the second day, the wind strength diminished and clocked right. Temperatures were cold with our record breaking Canadian cold front reaching very far south.
Nancy Glover and Frank McNamara’s two teams are vying for one Corinthian berth offered through the Davis Island Winter Series for the 2018 J/70 World Championship qualification. A boat’s series score will be the total of her finishing positions in her two best regattas. The last and third regatta (“Series 3”) will be held on the weekend of Feb 10-11. Fleet 9 hopes both teams will be able to compete and repeat their prior two regatta performances in Series 3.
Congratulations Nancy Glover and Team WinterWind who took second overall in the Series 2 Corinthian division, which had twenty-two teams competing. WinterWind ended up fourteenth out of a total 53 boat fleet. WinterWind had Rick Myers on bow, Kevin Kendall on trimming and Mark Foster driving.
Congratulations Frank McNamara and Team Chinook who took third overall as well in the Series 2 Corinthian division. Chinook ended seventeenth overall in the Open division, with Rick Guardia trimming, Patrick Andreasen and Don Snelgrove sharing bow and tactical responsibilities.
Fleet 9’s Darby Smith drove Africa and finished a respectable twenty-fifth overall. Africa had Duncan Swain on main and tactics. Chris Remeika trimmed jib and spinnaker and Trent Long, who brought along his kite-boarding expertise, on bow.
There are eleven berths still up for grabs for 2018 J/70 World Championship qualification. Three open berths and one Corinthian berth as part of the Davis Island Series. The 2018 St Petersburg NOOD has one open berth, and the last qualification regatta is the 2018 Midwinter Championship at Coral Reef Yacht Club, Miami held on February 23- 25.
