Three Fleet 9 teams are competing in the 2017/2018 Davis Island Yacht Club Quantum J/70 Winter Series. Series 1 was held on December 9 – 10 where wind conditions were heavy and strong on day one with four races completed. Day two say lighter and flatter conditions with three races.
The regatta series includes a Friday North U practice day clinic which was well attended with 25 boats out. This weekend featured a dock talk discussing boat setup and tuning, followed by on-the-water coaching by North U. Practice races were run by J/World, with debrief immediately after sailing with North U and J/World.
Congratulations Frank McNamara and Team Chinook who took third overall in the Corinthian division, which had twenty-one teams competing. Chinook ended up twentieth out of a total 53 open and Corinthian boats. Chinook had Charlie Welsh on bow position, Rick Guardia trimming and Patrick Andreasen legs-in collaborating strategy and tactics with Charlie.
Nancy Glover’s Winter Wind finished with a very respectable fifth place Corinthian after scoring both a DNC and a DNF. Ignoring those two finishes, Winter Wind’s average score per race was just 15 points which is equivalent to 20th place overall.
Fleet 9’s Darby Smith drove Africa with Duncan Swain third position and father Jud Smith trimming. Congratulations Darby and Team Africa with a second place overall in Open division in Series 1 with just thirty-five points net. Six of Africa’s finishes were top ten.
There are eleven berths still up for grabs for 2018 J/70 World Championship qualification. Three open berths and one Corinthian berth as part of the Davis Island Series. The 2018 St Petersburg NOOD has one open berth, and the last qualification regatta is the 2018 Midwinter Championship at Coral Reef Yacht Club, Miami held on February 23- 25.
