Conditions at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club hosted 2016 Quantum J/70 Midwinter Championship were quite varied and tricky. Competitors coped with puffs and shifts on day one and two, and on day three, the wind was light between 5 and 8 knots.
Glenn Darden and Reese Hillard on Hoss controlled the regatta from day one and never lost their lead with one 1st place, four 2nds and with a worst throw out of 13 on day three after 8 races. William Ballard of Snaproll won the Corinthian standing and placed 18th in the Open division. 46 boats competed in the regatta.
Will Welles with Seabags Sailing Team took 2nd place overall with 5 finishes better than 4th place. Darby Smith steered AFRICA with trimmer William Felder who placed 11th overall after finishing a very enviable second place on day three alone.
Dave Franzel and Team Spring finished 19th overall after taking a Black Flag Rule penalty in race 2 which probably set the team back four places in the overall standing. Frank McNamara’s Chinook placed 22nd in the regatta after three better finishes toward the end of the regatta.
