Fleet 9 News – 2015 New England Championship/NOOD Regatta
In the 23-boat J/70 fleet, Jud Smith and Team AFRICA dominated the competition by being faster than most most of the time and making great tactical calls. Second place went to Will Welles and Team Scamp who also dominated bringing in all finishes no worse than 5th.
The regatta consisted of 10 races with one throw-out race. It pulled six out of town teams including Stampede, Rimette, Navega Racing, Torqeedo, Turbo Duc...k and Nirvana 7. Stampede took third overall and Dave Franzel with Team Spring grabbed fourth place. Franzel and his crew raced an excellent
regatta with five finishes better than fifth. Stewart Neff and Team Rascal placed 6th overall after missing one race due to the loss of their spinnaker halyard which may have caused them to lose one or two places in the overall standing.
· Day one consisted of three races with light breeze, thunder and rain.
· Day two saw North East breeze which built up throughout the day with the fleet searching for smaller seas and pressure puffs from the left; however, the top right started working later in the day and with the skies opened to blue, many went right after the leeward mark finding decent pressure.
· On day three, the breeze built to fourteen knots in race two which stayed until the end of the day. Competition was stiff, mark roundings were as tight as starts, and finishes came down to inches with spinnaker poles barely grazing skippers and booms almost kissing the RC boat.
· Day three definitely brought home great competitive racing for all leaving sailors fulfilled. The regatta organizers came through with superb race management, off-the-water social and debriefs after racing. The Eastern Yacht Club debuted its new Sailing Center which was a huge success.
Fourteen of the 23-boat fleet were registered Corinthian teams:
Tyler Doyle and crew (USA 245) took first place in the Corinthian division with Sam Altreuter and Team Leadfoot taking second overall. Daan Goedkoop and Team Fluff took third as Corinthians. Frank McNamara (Team Chinook) and Ted Johnson (Team VitaminJ) grabbed fourth and fifth place, respectively. Team Torqeedo continued to push forward with one of the youngest driver teams on the J/70 circuit. Dylan (10), Lily (12) and father Brandon Flack share the tiller with Cindy Flack, a self-proclaimed sailor by marriage, keeping the boat in order.
Marblehead Fleet 9’s next event is the August 29-30 ONE regatta which according to Amendment #1 is a two day event.
